Mega Millions jackpot hit in Calif., Powerball rises

No April Fool's joke: Powerball winner B. Raymond Buxton holding a ceremonial check for $425 million, the amount of the annuity jackpot he hit in February 2014. Buxton's shirt had a picture of Yoda with the message "Luck of the Jedi I have." (California Lottery)

There's been another California gold rush -- at least in terms of lottery loot winding up there.

On Friday night, a single California ticket hit a Mega Millions ticket worth $180 million for the annuity, $107.1 million for the cash. The ticket, purchased at a 7-Eleven on County Line Road in Calimesa, west of Los Angeles, matched all the numbers drawn: 5, 31, 34, 41 and 74, with a Mega Ball of 3.

Remarkably, it's the fifth major jackpot won in the Golden State this year.

In July, John "Jack" Long hit a $60 million Powerball jackpot, and took the $36 million cash. In April, a $30 million Mega Millions annuity was hit by Leopoldo Choi in Los Angeles. In March,  Joseph Saxer hit a $60 million Powerball jackpot, and took the lump sum, $34.4 million.

February had the biggest haul of all, when Raymond Buxton hit a $425.3 million Powerball jackpot and collected $242 million in cash.

A Pennsylvania ticket was the only $1 million winner in Friday's Mega Millions drawing. It matched the first five numbers but not the Mega Ball. It was sold in Berks County, at Bandit Truck Plaza, 2277 Golden Key Road, in New Smithville.

The Mega Millions jackpot rebooted to  $15 million ($8 million cash) for Tuesday's drawing.

Powerball. Wednesday's annuity jackpot will be worth $80 million ($48.8 million cash), because no one matched all the numbers drawn Saturday night: 28, 32, 35, 36 and 52, with a Powerball of 31.

A Colorado ticket won $2 million for matching the first five while having the Power Play prize-boosting option. A Kentucky ticket won $1 million for matching the first five without the Power Play.
