23 cows from Pa. farm dead after truck crash

Twenty-three cows from a Pennsylvania farm have are now dead after a weekend truck wreck near Wilmington.

The crash happened Saturday afternoon, when the driver of a tractor-trailer containing 42 cows lost control and overturned on the ramp from Interstate 495 north to Terminal Avenue. The tractor-trailer then landed on the guardrail, police said.

The Wilmington News Journal reports today that 23 of the cows died in the crash or were euthanized. Nineteen survived. Several escaped from the trailer and wandered on the highway after the crash; troopers had to remove them from the road.

The cows were all from a Pennsylvania farm, the News Journal reports, though authorities would not identify the farm.

All were pregnant Holsteins on their way to Jordan, according to the News Journal.

Delaware State Police say the truck driver, 23-year-old Patrick Scholten, was cited for inattentive driver. He was not injured in the crash.
