Paula Deen defends southern attitude towards race

People may be shocked with Food Network's decision to fire Paula Deen over her use of the N-word, but it isn't the first time the chef has said strange things about race.

In the fall of 2012, Deen spoke with New York Times reporter Kim Severson about a variety of topics, with race and prejudice in the south coming up.

"I feel like the south is almost less prejudiced because black folks played such an integral part in our lives," Deen said. "They were like our family."

At another point Deen expressed camaraderie for an employee who was "black as a board."
