A 31-year-old man was discovered dead in a vehicle in Chester, Delaware County, early Saturday.

The victim, identified as Nijah Carpenter, of Chester, was found unresponsive inside a red 2002 Nissan Altima, police said. He had blood around his mouth and chest and appeared to have been shot, Chester Police Chief James Nolan said in a news release.

About 8:20 a.m., a Chester officer on routine patrol was flagged down by pedestrians, who alerted him to the unresponsive man in the vehicle, which was parked halfway in the 500 block of East 11th Street and halfway in a field, Nolan said.

The officer found Carpenter sitting in the driver's seat. Medics pronounced him dead at the scene.

Police said they were investigating Carpenter's death as a homicide, but an autopsy will be conducted by the Delaware County Medical Examiner's Office.
