Man dies after trying to board moving SEPTA train at Olney Transportation Center

A man who was rushing to catch a southbound SEPTA subway train at the Olney Transportation Center early Saturday died after jumping onto the area between two cars, then falling back onto the platform and landing on the tracks, SEPTA authorities said.

"He's racing to get it," SEPTA Assistant General Manager Fran Kelly said of the man's attempt to catch the train at about 1:30 a.m. at the station at Broad Street and Olney Avenue.

But the doors shut before he could make it aboard. The train operator didn't see the man, Kelly said.

The man then tried to get on the train by jumping onto the section between two cars, but fell back onto the platform, then landed on the tracks, Kelly said.

The victim was not discovered until after the next southbound train came into the station and ran over his body. The train's emergency braking system stopped the train from moving. The man was then found underneath the train.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. SEPTA authorities and police did not immediately know his identity.

The Olney Transportation Center is at the border of the Logan, Ogontz and Fern Rock neighborhoods in Philadelphia.
