A 55-year-old man was shot in his left arm by police after he allegedly threatened officers with a rifle late Wednesday afternoon in the city's Mayfair section.

Just before 5:50 p.m., police were called to the 6300 block of Crafton Street and were met by a woman who said her husband was standing at the front door armed with a rifle, said Lt. John Stanford.

The officers ordered the man to drop the rifle and took defensive positions behind a vehicle, Stanford said. The officers again ordered the man to drop the weapon but he instead allegedly lowered it in their direction.

Stanford said both officer fired their sidearms, striking the man. The man was taken to Aria Health-Torresdale Campus, where he was expected to be treated and released into police custody.

The officers will be assigned to administrative duty pending an Internal Affairs investigation.
