A 69-year-old man was killed Tuesday morning in a car crash in Upper Darby, police said. The victim was behind the wheel of Lexus about 6:30 a.m. when he pulled out from Belfield Avenue onto Township Line Road (Route 1) to make a left hand turn.

His car was then struck in the passenger side by a Dodge Ram pickup truck in the southbound lane.

"The impact was so severe the man was trapped," said Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood. It took rescuers about an hour and a half to free the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.

Rt. 1 was closed for about two hours, he said.

The driver of the pickup was taken to the police station after he was found to have an outstanding probation warrant in Montgomery County, Chitwood said.

Police are not yet identifying the victim or driver, he said.

The accident is still under investigation. Police do not believe alcohol or drugs were involved, Chitwood said.

"It looks like a horrible accident," said Chitwood.
