Pedestrian struck, injured on Route 73 in Maple Shade

A pedestrian was struck and injured by a vehicle while crossing Route 73 in Maple Shade, Burlington County, Saturday morning, authorities said.

At about 5 a.m., a 30-year-old man from Marydel, Md., was crossing the southbound lanes of the highway, between Fox Meadow Drive and Evergreen Circle, where there was no crosswalk, Lt. Jeffrey Hoch of the Maple Shade Police Department said.

The victim suffered a broken nose, scrapes and bruises and was taken to a local hospital, where he was expected to be released Saturday afternoon, Hoch said.

The driver of the vehicle stopped at the scene and called 911. No charges are expected to be filed.

This was the second time in the past week that a pedestrian was struck while crossing Route 73 in Maple Shade. The other resulted in a fatality.

About 9 p.m. Tuesday, Eric Orfe, 46, of Palmyra, was crossing the south lanes of the busy highway, between Route 38 and Regent Avenue, when he was hit by a car, police have said. Orfe was pronounced dead at the scene. The man driving the car immediately stopped and was not charged.

Hoch urged pedestrians to be cautious and to not cross highways where there is no crosswalk.
