A pedestrian was killed Tuesday night as he crossed a busy South Jersey highway in Maple Shade Township, Burlington County, police said.

About 9 p.m., the man was crossing Route 73 South, between Route 38 and Regent Avenue, when he was hit by a car, Lt. Jeffrey Hoch of the Maple Shade Police Department said Wednesday.

The adult male, whose name and age were not released, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The man driving the car immediately stopped and cooperated with police.

"Unfortunately, the guy crossed where there wasn't a crosswalk," said Hoch. "That's a dangerous thing to do."
