Woman, 40, killed in hit-run in S. Philly; 6 others injured

A 40-year-old woman who was standing on a South Philadelphia street corner with her husband and 2-year-old son was killed in a hit-and-run crash Friday night, police said.

A 40-year-old woman who was standing on a South Philadelphia street corner with her husband and 2-year-old son was killed in a hit-and-run crash Friday night, police said.

The accident happened about 8:30 p.m. at 21st and Jackson Streets when the driver of a white 1997 Toyota Avalon plowed through a stop sign and was struck by a minivan; the car then jumped the curb and hit the family on the corner, police said.

Police Inspector Ray Evers told reporters Friday night at the scene: "The white vehicle disregarded the stop sign right here. The van struck the car. You can see the door of the white car stuck on front of that minivan. The car slid out of control. There was a family on the southeast corner of 21st and Jackson, and the whole family was struck."

The woman, whose name was not released, suffered massive head trauma and was pronounced dead at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center about 8:45 p.m., police said.

The toddler and his father, 45, suffered nonlife-threatening head and facial injuries and were taken to Jefferson University Hospital, police said.

The Avalon driver, a 34-year-old man, fled but was later taken into custody by police at his home without incident. Police said he is expected to be charged with homicide by vehicle and related offenses. His name was not immediately released.

Four people who were in the minivan - a male driver, 37, and three female passengers, ages 8, 11, and 16 - also were taken to Jefferson with nonlife-threatening injuries, police said.

Witnesses told police that the Avalon, heading west on Jackson, was traveling at high speed. The minivan, a 2002 Toyota Sienna, was traveling south on 21st Street when it struck the Avalon. The collision was so forceful that one of the Avalon's doors came off and became stuck to the minivan.

The driver fled the scene in the Avalon, then got out of the car at Lambert Street and Snyder Avenue, about a block from the crash scene, police said. He went to his home and told a family member he had just been involved in an accident, and that family member called 911, police said.

That man and a 28-year-old woman who was a passenger in his car were not hurt, police said.
