A Montgomery County man was convicted Thursday of breaking into a Hatfield Township apartment and raping a 6-year-old girl who had been asleep in her bed.

A jury found Oscar Herrera guilty of six of seven charges against him - including rape and burglary - after a trial at the county courthouse in Norristown this week.

Prosecutors said the child was "living her worst nightmare" that night in November as she was raped, until her 11-year-old brother awoke to get his parents. Herrera, 27, was arrested that night.

Herrera's attorney did not dispute that his client had broken into the apartment and climbed into the girl's bed. But he argued at trial that Herrera was not guilty of all of the charges against him.

The jury announced its verdict Thursday afternoon. In addition to finding Herrera guilty on six charges, jurors acquitted him of a misdemeanor charge of loitering and prowling, according to a spokeswoman for the District Attorney's Office.

Herrera will be sentenced at a later date.
