Iris Delgado was wrapping up her report on the soda tax proposal at 11:03 p.m. Wednesday when a woman in a green T-shirt tried to interrupt.
"Excuse me, excuse me," the woman told Delgado, who appeared to ignore the looming presence to her right.
When Delgado finished her presentation, the woman without warning slapped the back of the reporter's head and followed it up with a right to her face, and just as quickly began pulling Delgado's hair to drive her to the ground.
The broadcast quickly turned back to anchor Ramon Zayas, who exclaimed, "¡Ay, Dios mio!" ("Oh, my God!")
Meanwhile, Delgado's news crew sought to protect her, then followed the woman, identified by police as Waheedah Wilson, for a block until police arrived.
Wilson, 37, of the 300 block of South Broad Street, was charged with simple assault and recklessly endangering another person, and was in custody Friday night.
The station said the attack was unprovoked.
"Thankfully, she is OK and is understandably taking some time off to recover," the station said. "We look forward to her return."
Wilson has a criminal history that includes a conviction for drug possession with intent to deliver, according to public records.
Afterward, Delgado complained of pain to the right side of her head but said she would seek treatment later, according to the police report.
Delgado, who joined the station in 2013, covers the Latino community and has filled in as an anchor, according to her online biography.
