The chairman of the Devon Horse Show was charged last week with public drunkenness.

Wayne Grafton, 67, of Unionville, Chester County, was charged with the summary offense by the Tredyffrin Township Police Department.

According to the West Chester Daily Local News, police issued the citation for an incident that happened about 10:20 p.m. Tuesday along South Valley Forge Road outside a gate of the Devon Horse Show grounds.

The "defendant did have glassy, bloodshot eyes, odor of alcoholic beverages," and his speech was slurred, the citation said, according to the Daily Local.

This year's Devon Horse Show began May 26 and lasts through Sunday.

The Tredyffrin Township Police Department on Saturday morning confirmed Grafton was charged with a summary offense of public intoxication, but it declined further comment.

Grafton, reached on his cellphone Saturday afternoon, said: "I haven't received a citation. ... I can't comment on something I haven't seen."

Grafton said he was on the horse show grounds Tuesday night for an emergency involving an accident with a horse, and said no one from law enforcement approached him. He said he was not drunk.

"I've never been drunk in my life," he said. "Maybe that's the story."
