A Cabrini College professor died when he was hit by a car as he tried to cross Lancaster Avenue in Wayne during a downpour Saturday, police said.

David Dunbar, 51, of Exeter Township, Berks County, was hit after leaving the Anthony Wayne movie theater near Lancaster and Wayne Avenues about 9 p.m., authorities said.

Dunbar did not attempt to cross at the corner crosswalk, Radnor Township Police Lt. Chris Flanagan said. The driver, who remained at the scene, did not see Dunbar in time to stop, Flanagan said.

"When you're getting rained on and it's cold, you sometimes start making moves" into a dangerous situation, the officer said.

The driver was unharmed and is cooperating with investigators, police said. The motorist's name was not released.

Dunbar, a biology professor, had taught at Cabrini since 2001, according to the college's website. He had three children, it said.

"David was a pillar of our community and the Cabrini family," the school said in a statement. "He was dedicated to our students, to academic research, to community engagement, and to our mission. David will be sorely missed by all."

Dunbar graduated from Lycoming College, earned his Ph.D. in molecular biology at Lehigh University, and conducted postdoctoral studies at the Yale School of Medicine, the biography said. His research projects included studying a 250-year-old microbe; genes involved in mouse mammary gland development; and viral genome sequencing.

In addition to his teaching duties, Dunbar was Cabrini's faculty athletic representative, overseeing academic issues involving student athletes.
