After crash, driver forces man to ATM withdrawal

Now this is a fender mind-bender.

When two motorists' vehicles collided Wednesday in Nicetown, one driver told the other that he was armed, forced him back into his vehicle, and made him withdraw money from an ATM to pay for the damage, police said.

The victim, who was not injured, was nonetheless a nervous wreck after the incident.

According to police, shortly before 10 a.m. the 20-year-old victim was in a traffic accident at Germantown and Hunting Park Avenues with an unknown man in a gold SUV.

When the victim got out of his car to speak with the SUV driver, that man told the victim that he had a gun and that they were going to the nearest ATM so the victim could "dump" his account to pay for the damage, police said.

While in the car, the man from the SUV took $100 from the victim's wallet. When they arrived at a gas station in the 4000 block of North Broad Street, the man made the victim withdraw an additional $150 from his bank account, police said.

The man then ran from the area and was last seen heading toward Hunting Park Avenue.

Lt. John Stanford, a police spokesman, said investigators will look at all aspects of the case, including whether the collision may have been a set-up for the robbery.
