A person was struck and killed by an Amtrak train Friday morning in Chester.

An Amtrak spokesman said the person was hit while trespassing on the track area near the Chester Transportation Center shortly before 10 a.m.

The victim was struck by a Northeast Regional train that was traveling from New York City to Washington, D.C., Amtrak said. No one on the train was harmed.

The Delaware County Medical Examiner's office said the person died.

The incident remains under investigation.

Trains were halted for nearly an hour as emergency crews responded to the scene. Amtrak said trains began moving again at restricted speeds by 10:45 a.m.

The 384 passengers on the train that hit the trespasser were being transferred to another train.
