Williams: No timetable on LeSean McCoy incident

Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams said Friday that prosecutors were still reviewing evidence from a bar brawl this month that allegedly involved former Eagles running back LeSean McCoy, and that there was "no timetable" for a decision on potential criminal charges.

“The last thing anyone wants is a rush to judgment,” District Attorney Seth Williams (right) said on the investigation into LeSean McCoy. “It’s my job to get it right, not to get it fast.”

Philadelphia District Attorney Seth Williams said Friday that prosecutors were still reviewing evidence from a bar brawl this month that allegedly involved former Eagles running back LeSean McCoy, and that there was "no timetable" for a decision on potential criminal charges.

In his first public comments on the nearly two-week-old investigation, Williams sought to quell complaints from police officials and others who have questioned why a decision has not been made.

"The last thing anyone wants is a rush to judgment," Williams said. "It's my job to get it right, not to get it fast."

McCoy, 27, who now plays for the Buffalo Bills, and three friends allegedly stomped, kicked, and punched a group of off-duty police officers at Recess Lounge in Old City around 2:45 a.m. Feb. 14, leaving two of the officers hospitalized. The melee apparently erupted after McCoy's group and the officers argued over a bottle of champagne.

Videos have surfaced purporting to show McCoy throwing a punch, and John McNesby, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5, told WIP-FM on Friday morning that McCoy threw a "sucker punch" at one of the officers.

"I've never waited this long, ever, to see somebody arrested," McNesby told the station.

McCoy's defense attorney, Dennis Cogan, called McNesby's comments "outrageous" and said all parties should let the investigation proceed.

Williams said Friday that prosecutors were reviewing videos, witness interviews, and medical records, and that while some videos had surfaced publicly, reaching a decision on charges required time.

"For those that want expedience, we're going to make sure the timetable is justice," Williams said.

McCoy's friends who were allegedly involved were former West Catholic High School star Curtis Brinkley, 30; McCoy's former teammate at the University of Pittsburgh, Tamarcus Porter, 27; and Christopher Henderson, 26, according to initial incident reports.

The three off-duty officers were Sgt. Daniel Ayres and Officers Darnell Jessie and Roland Butler, the reports said. Jessie and Butler were reportedly hospitalized after the altercation for injuries including a potential skull fracture and broken ribs.
