Person of interest sought in deadly S. Jersey hit-run

Investigators say a person of interest in a deadly hit-and-run crash in Camden County was seen entering a bar shortly after the incident.

Investigators say a person of interest in a deadly hit-and-run crash in Camden County was seen entering a bar shortly after the incident.

Prosecutors are asking for help identifying the man suspected of having been involved in the Jan. 29 crash that left a 55-year-old Atco man dead.

John Hayes died after he was struck by two vehicles while crossing Tansboro Road at Gardens Avenue in Berlin Borough on Jan. 29.

The driver of the first vehicle, a minivan, stopped and remained at the scene, according to the Camden County Prosecutor's Office.

The second vehicle, believed to be a mid-2000s dark-colored Nissan Sentra with a New Jersey license plate, fled.

New surveillance footage shows the suspect's vehicle driving on South White Horse Pike near the New Berlin Diner shortly before the crash, prosecutors said.

Additional surveillance video shows a vehicle matching the description of the suspect's car parking at the Golden Nugget Tavern on Berlin-New Freedom Road at about 7:30 p.m., a few minutes after police were dispatched to the crash.

A man then entered the bar, and detectives want to speak with that person, who is considered a person of interest in the crash.
