Pope's Fiat up for auction tonight

If you consider celebrity cars, the Popemobile is just one in a long list: the Batmobile, the General Lee, the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile, the Ghostbusters' Ectomobile, Stephen King's Christine, the Munsters' Drag-U-La and so on.

If you consider celebrity cars, the Popemobile is just one in a long list: the Batmobile, the General Lee, the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile, the Ghostbusters' Ectomobile, Stephen King's Christine, the Munsters' Drag-U-La and so on.

But a Popemobile is here in Philadelphia. And it can be yours tonight.

The Fiat 500L that carried Pope Francis around Philadelphia during his September visit will be auctioned off for charity at 9 p.m. tonight at the Philadelphia Auto Show Black Tie Tailgate at the Pennsylvania Convention Center.

There's no telling how much someone might pay for a chance to own the car whose seats were once graced by Francis' fanny.

But for context, the car retails for about $20,000.

And Francis fervor was so intense during his fall visit that one politician, U.S. Rep. Bob Brady, even swiped the pope's glass to sip the same water that had touched His Holiness' lips - and then passed the glass around his friends and family to share.

Can't make it to the convention center tonight to bid in person? No worries. Max Spann Real Estate & Auction Co., which will conduct the auction, will allow for remote bidding, too.

Half of the proceeds will go to the Catholic Charities Appeal to help the homeless and poor. The other half will be split among Mercy Hospice, Casa Del Carmen and the Archdiocese of Philadelphia's special education schools.

The unlucky bidders who won't drive the famed Fiat home will can still see another at the auto show. The pontiff used a second Fiat 500L while he was in town. That car will be on display - and perhaps auctioned off as well - during the auto show, which starts Saturday and runs through Feb. 7.
