Archdiocese reaches settlement with feds on nursing home

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia has entered into a settlement agreement concerning resident care at one of its former nursing homes in South Philadelphia, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced Tuesday.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia has entered into a settlement agreement concerning resident care at one of its former nursing homes in South Philadelphia, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced Tuesday.

In the agreement between the Archdiocese's Catholic Health Care Services and the U.S. Attorney's Office in Philadelphia, the archdiocese has agreed to improve or has already improved resident care at St. Monica Center for Rehabilitation and Healthcare, at 2509 S. Fourth St.

Areas of concern related to physician orders, wound care, medication administration, documentation of care, and transfer and toileting of residents, the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a news release.

Pursuant to the agreement, the Archdiocese has also agreed to pay $80,000, prosecutors said.

The U.S. Attorney's Office had subpoenaed documents from St. Monica's on March 5, 2013, following inquiries made to the office from family members of former or current residents at the nursing home.

In 2014, the Archdiocese had sold St. Monica and other nursing and senior-living facilities to Center Management Group, a privately held for-profit company in Flushing, N.Y., which owns and operates nursing homes in New York and New Jersey.

Center Management Group has agreed to assume all duties in connection with the settlement agreement, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

The New York company is also part of the settlement agreement.

Under the agreement, there has been no determination of civil liability, and St. Monica denies any liability, the U.S. Attorney's Office said.

Catholic Health Care Services of the Archdiocese provides support and services to older adults within the Archdiocese.

People who have complaints regarding fraud, waste or abuse related to Medicare or other federal programs are asked to call the U.S. Attorney's Office at 215-861-8200.
