A Montgomery County couple has been arrested for drug trafficking after police found $13,000 worth of heroin in their homes.

Melissa Griffin, 21, and Dashawn Smith, 25, both of Pottstown, had 1,291 bags of heroin, more than $5,000 in cash, a taser, and five cell phones in two residences that police searched in Pottstown and Stowe.

Montgomery County District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman announced their arrests Monday following a nearly month-long investigation.

Police were first called to the Stowe residence on Nov. 28 after receiving a report that Smith had burglarized the residence and held a gun to the head of Griffin, then identified as his ex-girlfriend.

During further investigation, combined with a separate investigation into heroin trafficking in Pottstown, investigators observed Griffin and Smith together.

When officers arrived to arrest Smith last week, police said he attempted to discard heroin and flee. Two officers were injured during his arrest, Ferman said. The estimated street value of heroin found when search warrants were served is $13,000, officials said.

Griffin and Smith were arraigned Friday and are being held at Montgomery County Correctional Facility. They are both facing several charges of drug trafficking; Smith is also charged with assault and recklessly endangering another person.
