Rower honored for charity challenge

MEDIA The Delaware County Council recognized rower George Pagano Jr. with a resolution of support at its meeting Wednesday.

Pagano, 23, of Middletown, a Haverford School graduate, and a partner are to launch their boat in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Africa on Dec. 15 in a transatlantic rowing challenge. They aim to raise money for the Greater Philadelphia ALS Association in memory of Pagano's grandfather, the council said in a statement.

Pagano is to row in the Talisker Whisky Challenge, a 3,000-mile journey from the Canary Islands to Antigua, in the Caribbean. He and Caitlin Miller, a former classmate from the University of Nebraska, have named their team the Cranial Challenge.

The event includes 31 other teams and is expected to take about three months.

The challenge "is a great way to combine their love for rowing and give back to a cause they care about. We wish them a safe journey and much success in their efforts," Councilman Mike Culp said. The challenge can be followed online at www.taliskerwhiskyatlanticchallenge.com. - Inquirer staff
