NORRISTOWN More Montgomery County police officers and other first responders will be equipped with Naloxone, a drug, also known as Narcan, that counteracts the effects of opioids such as heroin, officials announced Tuesday.

The District Attorney's Office will use $160,000 in drug forfeiture assets to equip police officers and first responders with Naloxone. District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman announced the initiative Tuesday and said that since some officers began carrying Naloxone in April, it has been used to save 16 lives.

"Every police department in Montgomery County will have it," Ferman said. "The purchase that we're making will be for a batch of the drug and will be good for the next two years."

County officials also announced the installation of new drug drop-off boxes Tuesday. Boxes will be installed at the East Norriton and West Norriton Police Departments.

On Saturday, the county will hold a drug take-back day, for residents to dispose of drugs at local police departments. - Laura McCrystal
