Two men who drowned after their car went out of control and landed upside down in a pond on Friday in Tredyffrin Township, Chester County, were brothers, one of whom was a father of three, police said Thursday.

Michael McAleer, 54 and Thomas L. McAleer, 52 were on their way to their Berwyn home on Oct. 2 shortly after 4:30 p.m., traveling north on Glenn Avenue, near Lancaster Avenue.

Thomas McAleer lost control of the 2000 Mercury Sable, which hit a curb, a sign, and a stone wall before flipping onto its roof in a small body of water along the road, witnesses told police.

The men were taken to Paoli Hospital, where they were pronounced dead. Both had drowned, the Chester County Coroner's Office said.

Slippery road conditions and speed contributed to the crash, police said. Over 1.5 inches of rain was measured officially in Philadelphia that day, a record for the date, according to the National Weather Service.

An investigation into the accident was continuing.

The brothers are survived by their mother, two sisters, a nephew and Michael McAleer's three children. A funeral is scheduled for Friday morning.
