Man sought in South Philly carjacking

Police say an unidentified driver led them on a heated chase early Friday.

AN UNIDENTIFIED man led two officers on an intense chase early yesterday, slamming into cars and even commandeering a bystander's vehicle.

The incident began at 12:38 p.m., when two officers spotted a black Ford Mustang blow through a stop sign at 17th and Reed streets in Point Breeze, police said.

When the officers attempted to pull the Mustang over, it sped away. The officers gave chase, watching as the vehicle turned the wrong way down Dickinson.

They then watched the driver, a 27-year-old man, rear-end a white Nissan Altima and then strike a parked vehicle.

At that point, the chase continued on foot, with the suspect pulling the driver of a gray Nissan Maxima out of the car on Camac Street near McKean in South Philly, police said.

He sped off with two female passengers still inside. The officers recovered the Maxima a few minutes later on 9th Street near Ritner. Neither passenger was injured, but the suspect escaped, police said.

Inside the car was an ID badge issued by the city's Department of Corrections. The women inside the car identified the person on the badge as the one who had taken them for a ride.

Police did not release that suspect's name last night, but said an arrest warrant for him had been issued.
