Ramsey names Philly cop in officer-involved shooting

The Philadelphia Police Department on Friday identified a 14-year veteran as the officer who shot a man who allegedly committed an armed robbery and then attempted to ambush another officer in West Philadelphia.

The Philadelphia Police Department on Friday identified a 14-year veteran as the officer who shot a man who allegedly committed an armed robbery and then attempted to ambush another officer in West Philadelphia.

Officer Brian Hines shot Marquis Cantland in the abdomen at the corner of 61st and Walnut Streets, where police said the suspect was waiting with a gun for an officer who was chasing him Wednesday morning. Hines ordered Cantland to drop the gun, the but he failed to comply, police said.

A loaded Kel-Tec 9mm semiautomatic was recovered at the scene. The 22-year-old Cantland, who survived, was charged with robbery, aggravated assault, and related offenses. Hines has been placed on administrative duty pending an investigation by the Internal Affairs Division.

The naming of Hines is part of Commissioner Charles H. Ramsey's new policy of naming officers involved in shootings. - Robert Moran
