After the explosion of an ATM in Hunting Park on Tuesday evening, officers from the Philadelphia police's bomb squad and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are studying surveillance videos and the materials used in the blast, which netted thieves no money.

Debris from the ATM at 4000 N. Sixth Street traveled up to 100 feet in the explosion that occurred at 9:22 p.m., officials said.

It was the second attempt to blow up a bank machine in North Philadelphia this month, authorities said.

On July 4, a bank machine on North Ninth Street was targeted with explosives as well, said Officer Steven Bartholomew of the ATF's Philadelphia office. There is no indication that the two ATMs were hit by the same suspects, Bartholomew said.

Investigators were conducting neighborhood interviews and watching video footage from Tuesday night in an effort to identify suspects.

The blasted ATM sits outside Rob's Barbershop. Owner Robert Diaz was home for the day when the blast occurred. He said he was relieved to find no property damage to his business when he returned to work.

Diaz said he doesn't want the risk of having the machine outside his cash-only business. "I'm getting rid of the ATM machine, that's for sure," he said.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the police department at 215-686-3250 or ATF's Philadelphia Field Division at 215-446-7800.
