Nutter, back from Mexico, says Trump's comments violate 'human decency'

On the heels of a diplomacy trip to Mexico, Mayor Nutter on Thursday scolded presidential candidate Donald Trump, saying the billionaire's recent comments about immigrants from that country were an attempt to "generate more money - which is kind of currently what he is all about."

On the heels of a diplomacy trip to Mexico, Mayor Nutter on Thursday scolded presidential candidate Donald Trump, saying the billionaire's recent comments about immigrants from that country were an attempt to "generate more money - which is kind of currently what he is all about."

"I've met him once. I don't know him. I mean, he's a TV character," Nutter said Thursday, speaking with reporters at City Hall a few hours after returning from a three-day trip to Puebla. "Whatever it is that he's talking about is vicious, it's negative, it's vile. And I think just violates general human decency."

Trump, who is running for the 2016 Republican nomination, has sparked controversy by describing Mexican immigrants as criminals and "rapists," calling the United States "a dumping ground for Mexico," and saying infectious disease "is pouring across the border."

Nutter, a Democrat, said that during his own trip to Mexico, he "very strongly and directly denounced" Trump's comments.

He said Trump is trying to "appeal to a particular constituency."

"Sometimes when people go right to the base level of whatever dark recesses of the mind, they'll talk about certain things to generate some activity or generate attention," the mayor said. "He seems to be a person who needs a significant amount of public attention, and pretty much will do anything to accomplish that goal."
