3 killed in fiery Schuylkill Expressway crash

Three people are dead and a fourth person has been hospitalized after their car crashed and burst into flames on the Schuylkill Expressway overnight.

The accident happened in the westbound lanes near Montgomery Drive at about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday.

When crews arrived at the scene, they encountered a car flipped on its side and engulfed in flames, Pennsylvania State Police said.

The 2014 Kia Optima crashed after veering off the roadway and hitting a concrete barrier, officials said.

Emergency crews found three people dead inside the vehicle, police said.

One male occupant was found outside the car and was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital for treatment.

Authorities had initially reported two deaths in the fiery crash, but later said three bodies were found in the vehicle.

The victims' names were not released because their families hadn't been notified.

Police didn't say how the surviving man made it out of the vehicle. His condition wasn't known.

It is not clear if rain was a factor and the circumstances of the accident remain under investigation.

No other cars were involved.

Motorists faced significant delays in the area overnight and during the morning rush.
