David P. Brownback, former Monroe teacher

David P. Brownback, 72, of Florence, a former Monroe Township schoolteacher, died of heart failure Sunday, June 7, at Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County in Willingboro.

David P. Brownback, 72, of Florence, a former Monroe Township schoolteacher, died of heart failure Sunday, June 7, at Lourdes Medical Center of Burlington County in Willingboro.

Born in Norristown, Mr. Brownback grew up in Morrisville and earned a bachelor's in education at Elizabethtown (Pa.) College in 1964 and a master's in education at what is now the College of New Jersey.

He retired in 1998 after 35 years in the Monroe Township public school system, his wife, Maryann, said.

Mr. Brownback taught fifth grade at the Applegarth Elementary School and then at Barclay Brook Elementary, she said.

After retiring, she said, "he became a truck driver for 10 years" for Ready-Pac, a distributor of fruits and vegetables in Florence.

For a time, Mr. Brownback was the treasurer for the Monroe Township Education Association and a Burlington County committeeman.

A Mason, he was a former master of the Mount Holly-Moorestown Masonic Lodge.

Besides his wife of 50 years, Mr. Brownback is survived by sons Thomas and Scott; a brother; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Visitations were set from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 14, and 9 to 10 a.m. Monday, June 15, both at the Dennison Funeral Home, 214 W. Front St., Florence, before a 10:30 a.m. Funeral Mass at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 145 W. Broad St., Burlington, with interment in the church cemetery.
