Two Philadelphia police officers shot and wounded a man with a handgun in Wynnefield on Wednesday morning, police said.

The shooting took place about 11 a.m. on the 1700 block of Georges Lane. Officers were in the area responding to a call about a person with a gun at 54th and Hazelhurst Streets, about a block away, police said.

Police spokesman Lt. John Stanford said the officers saw a man who fit the description of the person with a gun and attempted to stop him and a companion.

The man pulled a gun from his waistband and pointed it at the officers, who fired at him, Stanford said.

The officers chased the men down Georges Lane onto Columbia Avenue, where the armed man pointed the gun at officers again, who fired at him once more, police said.

The man was hit twice, police said, in the shoulder and right arm.

Police said the man threw the gun under a car and then squeezed through a hole in a fence and onto train tracks at the end of the street.

He was taken into custody by backup officers responding to the scene. The second man was still at large.

The injured man was driven in a police car to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, where he was listed in stable condition.

Joshua Brown, 28, who lives on the 5300 block of Oxford Street, said he heard about three shots while he was in the bathroom of his home, then someone screaming, "I don't have a gun."

"I was shocked," he said. After going outside and being ordered away by police, "I just went back to the house. I didn't see anyone," he said.

It was unclear who had been screaming. Police recovered a revolver underneath a car on Columbia, Stanford said.
