Students test prosthetic hands

WEST CHESTER High school design engineering students tested out the robotic hands they created using a 3D printer for two children, each born without one of their hands.

The high school students at Westtown School demonstrated two robotic prosthetic hands at their school Tuesday. The students worked in the design and engineering lab at the school's Science Institute.

The students gave one of the hands to Joy Baffone, a child whose mother heard about the students' project and asked that her daughter be part of it.

The students watched as Joy tried out the new hand they made for her. She picked up a ball and gripped a small plastic stick to blow bubbles. She said she was looking forward to playing in the sand, playing with her toys, and swimming.

The students plan to give the other hand to Steele Songle, a lower-school student at Westtown.
