Police and federal officials are investigating an early-morning burglary at a Delaware County gun store in which thieves made off with 19 weapons.

At 4:13 a.m., three or more men broke through the front window of the Suburban Armory, at 1008 McDade Blvd., in Collingdale. Once inside the store, they stole semiautomatic handguns, and revolvers, said Steven Bartholomew, special agent for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

"They smashed cabinets and grabbed the handguns," he said.

Police initially were called to the scene for a report of shots fired. Video cameras in the vicinity captured the incident, according to police.

The thieves were able to make a getaway in two vehicles. Police said that one, possibly a Pontiac Montana, had a license plate that started with YZ. The other car is described as a gray or light-colored four-door Oldsmobile Cutlass, according to police.

Investigators are hoping to track down the burglars before the guns are sold or traded for drugs, Bartholomew said.

Anyone with information is asked to call either Collingdale Borough Police at 610-586-0502 or ATF at 1-800-ATF-GUNS.
