Widener names artist in residence

CHESTER A retiring Widener University faculty member has been appointed artist in residence, the school announced.

John Vanore of Springfield, who retired as director of music and recording technology, is a jazz musician who toured with the Woody Herman Orchestra and played trumpet for some of the greats, including Tony Bennett, Sammy Davis Jr., Nancy Wilson, and Mel Torme.

As artist in residence, he will hold a professional jazz recital once a year in the newly renovated recital hall on Widener's main campus. He will also help book concerts in the venue and will remain director of the university's jazz band, a position he has held for more than 40 years.

An anonymous donor has established the John A. Vanore Fund to ensure that the robust music and performing arts program continues, the school announced.

Vanore earned his bachelor's degree from Pennsylvania Military College, which changed its name to Widener College in 1972.
