Drugs can be discarded in Montco on Saturday

More than 3,600 pounds of prescription drugs were turned in countywide on April 25.

[UPDATE: The District Attorney's Office reports that a whopping 3,656 pounds of prescription drugs were turned in countywide on April 25.  That is seven times more than was collected at the first giveback event in 2010, and roughly a quarter of the total amount collected since then.]

Montgomery County will hold a prescription drug take-back day Saturday.

Residents can leave prescription drugs with police officers at 27 locations.

"Time and time again, we see heroin addicts in our courtrooms that started down that path with pills thatthey first obtained from a medicine cabinet filled with unused dangerous prescriptions," District Attorney Risa Vetri Ferman said in an announcement of the drug take-back event.

Ferman said safely removing unused drugs from homes can help eliminate the supply available to addicts.

A full list of the drop-off locations open Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. is available at montcopa.org/da.

The county also has 25 year-round drug drop-off locations.
