Officials: Boy brought suspected heroin to school

A first grader at an elementary school in Fairhill allegedly brought 14 small bags of suspected heroin to school Tuesday, authorities said.

A first grader at an elementary school in Fairhill allegedly brought 14 small bags of suspected heroin to school Tuesday, authorities said.

The boy, who was not identified, showed the bags to classmates in the lunchroom at William Cramp Elementary School around 11 a.m., said Fernando Gallard, spokesman for the Philadelphia School District. The boy apparently dropped the bags on the floor, Gallard said, and two other first-grade boys told adults about them.

One of those adults was a Philadelphia police officer who was in the school conducting an antidrug program, Gallard said. The three boys and another classmate were taken to St. Christopher's Hospital for Children as a precaution, Gallard said. All were later released.

Philadelphia police spokeswoman Tanya Little said authorities were testing the baggies to determine whether they contained heroin. Little said the Special Victims Unit was investigating how the boy had obtained the bags. No arrests had been made as of Wednesday evening, Little said. - Chris Palmer
