ABINGTON Education officials in Abington will unveil a $5 million renovation of Memorial Field on Monday.

The field sits at Huntingdon and Susquehanna Roads, halfway between Abington Senior High School and Penn State Abington.

The school district owns and operates the field, but the university paid for the $5 million renovation. After its debut Monday, the field will be shared by the two schools and the community.

Memorial Field was built in 1948 to serve the field hockey, soccer, football, and track teams at the old Abington High School.

Officials began discussing a renovation six years ago, but contracts were not awarded until last summer. The new facility includes a new track, seating area, locker rooms, restrooms, a larger parking lot, and a new softball field.

The dedication will begin at 4 p.m. Monday, April 27. (A previous post incorrectly reported that the dedication would be Friday.)
