A 22-year-old Philadelphia man was arraigned Wednesday on weapons and assault charges after he allegedly shot his father in the head while they rode together on the Schuylkill Expressway during rush hour Tuesday.

A Montgomery County district judge set bail for Kymere Corbin at $500,000 cash and scheduled a preliminary hearing for April 20.

"You are going to jail unless you are able to post that," Judge William Maruszczak said as Corbin slumped in his chair in the King of Prussia courtroom.

Corbin's father, Elbert Corbin Jr., and his mother, Tanya Bates, were in the front seat of a 2010 Buick Lacrosse heading west on I-76 in stop-and-go traffic Tuesday evening to take their son to the Malvern Institute, a drug and mental-health rehabilitation facility, police said.

Around 5:45 p.m., the father and son began arguing, and the younger Corbin, in the backseat, pulled out a 9mm semiautomatic pistol and shot his father once in the head, police said.

Elbert Corbin was able to safely stop the car. Bates fled the scene. Police arrived soon after and arrested the 22-year-old.

Wearing navy blue jogging pants and a gray shirt that bore the slogan "Ale Is Well" on the back, the younger Corbin sat quietly through much of the proceeding Wednesday. He asked the judge about the process but said nothing about the allegations against him.

He will be held at the Montgomery County prison.

His father was reported in critical but stable condition Wednesday at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. The shooting closed westbound lanes for about an hour and jammed traffic in both directions.
