Bucks teacher charged with kissing student

A Bucks County social studies teacher has been charged with kissing one of his students several times and allegedly planning to have sex with her at a Street Road hotel.

Michael Swider, 33, of Southampton, teaches at William Tennent High School in Warminster. He first kissed the 18-year-old student earlier this month when she visited his classroom after school hours, police said.

The alleged open-mouth kissing - and talk of sex - continued on several occasions at the school and a local coffee shop. The teacher and student then planned to meet at a hotel in Feasterville-Trevose on Tuesday before Warminster police arrested him late Monday night, court records stated.

The investigation began after police received a report of the relationship, court records stated. When she was interviewed by police, the student allegedly told police about the encounters and their plans to have sex. Swider also confessed to kissing the girl and booking the hotel room to have intercourse, police said.

Swider posted $5,000 bond under the condition he can have no contact with the student. Reached by phone on Tuesday, he declined to comment on the matter.

Joyce Mundy, superintendent of the Centennial School District, said Swider was immediately placed on leave, and officials are cooperating with police.

"As a school community, we are extremely saddened about the situation," she wrote in an e-mail. "Our concern is always first and foremost focused on our students."
