A 27-year-old man was repeatedly shot at close range with an assault rifle while sitting in a car Friday night in the city's Tioga section, police said.
Sometime after 7 p.m., police responded to reports of gunshots in the 1500 block of West Butler Street, said Chief Inspector Scott Small. They found the victim in the driver's seat of a Ford Crown Victoria with eight gunshot wounds. Police took him to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 7:38 p.m.
Police found 20 shell casings from an assault rifle right next to the driver's door, some within inches of the car, Small said. Three casings from a handgun were found about 20 feet away. The car had been struck 15 times. A small package of what appeared to be crack cocaine was found near the car.
Investigators were checking surveillance video from a nearby business to see if the shooting was recorded. - Robert Moran
