Grants awarded to fire companies and EMS units

WEST CHESTER Pennsylvania has awarded more than $695,400 in grants to 57 volunteer fire companies and emergency medical services divisions throughout Chester County.

The money came from the state Volunteer Fire Company and Volunteer Ambulance Service Grant Program. In this funding cycle, the program awarded $30 million to 2,475 applicants statewide.

The agencies can use the money to build and renovate facilities, buy and repair equipment, train personnel, and reduce debt.

"The women and men who volunteer their time to keep us safe are true heroes," State Rep. Becky Corbin (R, Chester) said in a statement. "The very least we can do is make sure that they have the tools and skills necessary to do their jobs as safely and efficiently as possible."

Most fire companies in the county received grants of about $14,000. Most emergency medical services divisions received about $7,000.

Agencies granted money included Avondale Fire Company, Kimberton Fire Company, Keystone Valley Fire Department, Kennett Square Fire Company, Malvern Fire Company, and Longwood Fire Company.
