Rape and assault reported at West Chester University

A rape and a sexual assault were reported at West Chester University on Sunday. The separate incidents both occurred in on-campus apartments early Sunday.

In both cases, a female student was assaulted by a male student, and the victim knew the perpetrator, according to warnings by campus police.

The rape was the second on campus in three weeks. On Jan. 21, another female student was raped in a residence hall by a male student. An arrest in that case is pending, said Pam Sheridan, executive director of the university's office of communications. One other rape occurred on campus this school year during the fall semester, she said.

The victim of Sunday's rape did not report it directly to campus police and does not want the school to conduct an investigation, Sheridan said. An investigation is underway into the sexual assault, described by the university as unwanted fondling, she said.

Last May, a protest and vigil were held on campus after students received five e-mails in one month about sexual assault cases. - Justine McDaniel
