Emergency shelters open during expected cold spell

DOYLESTOWN In anticipation of this week's expected bitter cold weather, the Bucks County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) joined the county Health Department to issue a "Code Blue" declaration extending from 6 p.m. Tuesday through 7 a.m. Sunday.

The National Weather Service is predicting consecutive days of frigid temperatures, with lows hovering in the teens and sometimes falling into single digits. The EMA has made arrangements with three on-call churches - Calvary Baptist Church in Bristol (215-788-8418), Trinity Episcopal Church in Buckingham (215-794-7921), and West Swamp Mennonite Church in Quakertown (215-536-7468) - to activate their emergency shelters.

The on-call churches will coordinate transportation, temporary shelter, food, and other necessities.

County officials urge residents to check on their elderly neighbors during this period of frigid weather.

For shelter information, call the homeless hotline at 1-800-810-4434.
