Privatization is out for N.J. toll-takers

WOODBRIDGE, N.J. - Officials have decided not to privatize toll collection on the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway.

WOODBRIDGE, N.J. - Officials have decided not to privatize toll collection on the New Jersey Turnpike and the Garden State Parkway.

Turnpike Authority executive director Joseph Mrozek said that two unions representing supervisors agreed to concessions that provided enough savings that officials did not need to seek another round of pay cuts from the toll collectors.

Toll collectors on both toll roads in 2011 saved their jobs when they agreed to a contract that cut wages and provided an estimated $17 million in annual savings.

Mrozek said the agency would request a new proposal for contractors to operate the E-ZPass electronic toll system.

Turnpike toll plaza supervisors earning the maximum salary of $80,290 would make $69,958 under the new contract.

Maximum salaries for parkway toll plaza supervisors would drop from $82,118 to $69,000.
