S. Philly man charged with murder in lovers' quarrel

Corley Chapman beat a man he found fooling around with his girlfriend, and he died a year later, court records show.

IN A FIT OF RAGE, Corley Chapman savagely beat a man he found in the arms of his girlfriend last spring, police said.

Now, that crime of passion has ended one life and ruined another.

Chapman, 28, was charged yesterday with third-degree murder, voluntary manslaughter and involuntary manslaughter after the man he allegedly attacked, Robert Powell, died Friday from injuries he received at Chapman's hands, according to court documents.

That attack took place May 7, 2013, when Chapman walked into his home on Tasker Street near Capitol in Point Breeze to find his girlfriend in the midst of a naked tryst with Powell on the living-room floor, according to an affidavit of probable cause filed in the case.

Chapman's girlfriend told investigators that her beau began to pummel Powell in the face, hitting him so hard that blood began to seep from his eyes.

The girlfriend told cops that she intervened when Chapman tried to use an ironing board as a weapon, according to the affidavit.

Chapman was charged with aggravated assault and related offenses after admitting to police that he had attacked Powell, according to court records.

More than a year later, after various hospitalizations, Powell was pronounced dead Friday by doctors at Mercy Suburban Hospital in East Norriton, Montgomery County.

The county coroner ruled that his death was caused by a head injury and that it was homicide, court records show.

Chapman remained in custody last night in lieu of $100,000 bail. His attorney, Joseph P. Capone, did not return a call seeking comment.
