Two men found shot to death in Berks County

A volunteer equipment coach at a Montgomery County high school was one of two men found shot dead Friday morning inside a parked vehicle in Berks County, authorities said.

Steven E. Mixon, 27, of Pottstown, volunteered with the Pottsgrove High School football team and was a 2006 graduate.

The other man was identified as Joseph E. McCullough, 20, also of Pottstown.

"The initial stages of this investigation indicate that there are no other persons involved in this crime and therefore there are no concerns for public safety," Pennsylvania state police said in a brief report. The report did not elaborate.

About 6:15 a.m., a school bus driver found a parked vehicle with what appeared to be an unresponsive motorist. State police were called to the scene on Forgedale Road in Washington Township, state police said.

Mixon and McCullough were pronounced dead at the scene of apparent gunshot wounds, state police said.

The Berks County coroner was scheduled to conduct autopsies on both men Saturday morning.

Anyone who had contact with either man Thursday or early Friday was being asked to call state police at 610-378-4011.

On his Facebook page, Mixon said he worked as a manager at a sporting-goods store.

In a statement, the Pottsgrove School District said Mixon was "a longtime football manager at Pottsgrove, taking care of any football needs (equipment, helmets, shoulder pads) from 2006 to 2014."

A tweet from the Pottsgrove football team, the Falcons, called Mixon "Mr. Pottsgrove Football" and said: "Steve was the best. We should all live life as he did."

The Falcons played Phoenixville on Friday night. The district said Mixon's mother had urged them not to cancel the game. "Steve would have wanted them to play," she said, according to the district.

A moment of silence for Mixon was to be held before the game, the district said.
