A young male was struck by an outbound SEPTA train on the Wilmington/Newark Regional Rail line north of the Sharon Hill station during rush hour Wednesday, according to SEPTA officials.

The male was taken to a hospital in Philadelphia, SEPTA said. His condition and identity were not available. The train was traveling from Center City into Delaware when it hit the male around 5:30 p.m. in what was believed to be an accident, SEPTA said. It had about 500 people on board. SEPTA suspended trains in both directions. A little after 6 p.m., SEPTA officials said shuttle buses were en route to pick up passengers.

"The horn blew. We were braking, and we came to a faster brake than usual," said Deirdre Childress, a passenger on the train. Passengers were initially told there was an emergency, but were not told what had happened. After the train stopped, Childress said, several people on board called cabs to take them to Wilmington.
