A 42-year-old woman died Sunday from gunshot wounds she suffered while walking her dog to a neighborhood store in the city's Strawberry Mansion section, police said.

Police did not release the name of the woman, who was shot about 8:30 p.m. Saturday in the 3200 block of Morse Street and who died Sunday morning at Hahnemann University Hospital.

Another woman who had been walking with the victim told police a man standing on steps of a nearby house moved into the street and then opened fire on the victim, hitting her in the head and a thigh.

The victim's dog immediately fled but returned about three hours later and waited on the victim's porch while investigators processed the crime scene.

Police described the killer as about 6 feet tall, heavy-set, with a gray-and-black beard and wearing a hooded sweatshirt.

They said they were unsure of the motive for the killing.
