A Lower Merion Township resident was struck with a hammer by an assailant who broke into his home on Edgehill Road early Sunday morning, police said.

A Lower Merion Township resident was struck with a hammer by an assailant who broke into his home on Edgehill Road early Sunday morning, police said.

Police received a call at 4:09 a.m., after the homeowner and the homeowner's son confronted the intruder, who had entered the house through a living room window, Police Superintendent Michael J. McGrath said.

"A struggle ensued and the son was struck with a hammer," McGrath said.

Two victims were taken to Lankenau Medical Center "for evaluation and treatment," he said.

After scuffling with the residents, the intruder left the house and got into a car that was waiting in the alley behind the home.

No other information on the incident was available late Sunday morning.
