A 17-year-old boy drowned Thursday night while reportedly attempting to retrieve a soccer ball out of a recreational reservoir in Chester County, police said.

Around 8:20 p.m., emergency responders were called to Anson B. Nixon Park in Kennett Square, where the boy disappeared in the water, said Kennett Township Police Chief Albert McCarthy. The Kennett and Longwood Fire Companies performed a water rescue and the teen was taken to Jennersville Regional Hospital, where he later was pronounced dead.

The incident remained under investigation by police from Kennett Township and Kennett Square Borough, McCarthy said. - Robert Moran
